March 8 is the date that commemorates Women’s Day around the world.
The reason for this date is sadly known.
In fact, back in March 8, 1908, 129 female workers in a textile factory in New York City lost their lives in a fire.
All while they were demonstrating their protest against the low working conditions to which they were subjected.
The event greatly shocked world public opinion and since then it has been decided that this date would be the day to celebrate women in every country.
This date is at the same time combined with a flower, the mimosa.
But why this flower and not another?
It was the Italian women who chose the mimosa as the plant that would represent them
In 1946, the U.I.W., the Union of Italian Women, was chosen to celebrate the first Women’s Day at the end of the World War.
But the mimosa had its own story even before this.
In fact, when the American Indians decided to make declarations of war or love, they used to donate a small bouquet of mimosa.
British girls used to pin a sprig of mimosa to their jackets to emphasize their femininity.
On the other hand, the healing properties of mimosa are recognized by the Australian Aborigines who use it to make decoctions for certain pathologies.
The reasons that led Italian women to choose this flower for their party were less historical but more practical.
The mimosa, in fact, is an economic flower that grows spontaneously. It is so easy to find a branch that you can stop at your jacket or your shirt.
